Everything about Livonia Mall totally explained
Livonia Mall is an enclosed
shopping mall located in
Livonia, Michigan, a suburb of
Detroit, Michigan,
United States. Located at the corner of
7 Mile Road and Middlebelt Road, the center is classified as a
dead mall, having lost the majority of its stores to other competing malls for the past decade.
As of 2008, the mall features
Sears as its only
anchor store; two vacant anchors, last occupied by
Mervyns and
Value City, closed in 2006 and 2008, respectively.
Livonia Mall is managed by Konover Properties, who purchased the mall from its previous owner in 2005. Konover has made plans to redevelop the largely vacant center, whichis slated to close by the end of May.
History
The mall opened
October 29, 1964 with Sears and
Kresge as
anchor stores. A movie theater was added a year later, followed by
Crowley's, a Detroit-based department store.
Mervyns was added to the northern wing in 1987, the same year that the last remaining Kresge stores were shuttered; the Livonia Mall location was converted to smaller stores.
Child World, a toy store chain, was added to the west end of the mall in 1989; this store closed three years later and was eventually converted to a
paintball arena which has since closed. Crowley's was converted to Value City in March 2000. Mervyns closed in early 2006 as the chain eliminated all of its Michigan locations; as of 2008, the former Mervyns remains vacant. Value City closed in March 2008.
Re-development
Livonia Mall has seen the majority of its stores close up due to competition from newer malls nearby; also, the majority of its remaining stores are small, independent shops; as of 2007
Dollar Tree and
Foot Locker were among the only national chains with a presence there.
In 2007, Konover Properties announced plans for a possible redevelopment of the mall, including the addition of a new
big box retailer. Originally, plans called for the demolition of everything but the Sears and Value City stores.
